Les Herr, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Empire Life Insurance Company, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. (CLHIA).

Mr. Herr became President and Chief Executive Officer of Empire Life in April 2008, nine years after he joined the company as Director of Sales, Central Canada. He was appointed to the Executive Leadership Team as Vice-President, Individual Sales and Distribution in 2001, and to Executive Vice-President, Retail with responsibility for the entire Individual Products business line in 2007.

Mr. Herr holds an Executive MBA from Queen's University and is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts. He is an active presenter, speaker and participant within the financial services industry. He also sits on the Board of LL Global/Life Insurance and Market Research Association (LIMRA) and Life Office Management Association (LOMA) and is a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.

Mr. Herr has always been active in his community and led the 2011 Kingston Frontenac Lennox & Addington United Way Campaign to surpass its highest ever fundraising goal. He is also Fundraising Chair for Pathways to Education Kingston and the 1000 Islands Playhouse.

Established in 1894, the CLHIA is a voluntary association whose member companies account for 99 per cent of Canada’s life and health insurance business. The industry provides a wide range of financial security products such as life insurance, annuities (including RRSPs, RRIFs and pensions) and supplementary health insurance to more than 26 million Canadians. It also holds $574 billion of assets in Canada and employs about 139,000 Canadians.
